At the conclusion of the 2012-2013 NBA season, former basketball player Jason Collins came out as gay through Sports Illustrated. While over the years many athletes had come out and society was becoming more accepting, Collins became the first openly gay athlete to play in one of the major four North American professional sports leagues when he stepped on the court for the Brooklyn Nets in February 2014. He would go on to retire after the 2013-2014 season, being featured on the cover of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” in April 2014. Following Collins’s retirement from the NBA, he has been an advocate for LGBT rights, serving as an inspiration for the LGBT community and athletes, notably Michael Sam, who became the first openly gay NFL player in 2014.
