The reputation of the Atlanta Hawks as both a franchise and a fan base is marginal at best.. Historically speaking they’re never been exceptionally successful. Due to the city’s great number of transplants, games are often filled with rivals fans.
Their apparel has never been a huge seller across the board, but maybe that’s all about to change. Sports apparel company Starter is launching an exclusive Hawks collection this month. The 12-piece set includes hats, shirts and other items designed to appeal to both Hawks fans and the fashion-forward demo. It will highlight modern Hawks colors as well as retro styles, with a nod to some of the team’s most memorable logos.
Carl Banks, owner of apparel company G-III Sports and a former star linebacker for the NY Giants, helped relaunch Starter and is involved in the release of this collection. The entire set will debut at a party at Atlanta clothing shop Wish on December 8th.
Starter has been slowly but surely, trying to reassert the brand in today’s market with limited releases of their popular satin and pullover jackets and special collaborations like the Hawks collection. Once a style behemoth in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, the company fell out of the spotlight and has been trying to reignite their fortunes ever since. In light of that, this would seem to be a curious venture. Certainly the Hawks are in no way an automatic moneymaker. It’s possible this is the initial step for a larger launch, but as of yet, no further details have been released. For Hawks fans that can’t make the launch, the gear will also be available at Hawkshop.com as well as the retail shops at Philips Arena.
