As the NBA’s 2017 MVP, Russell Westbrook has made an indelible mark on the game. As the NBA’s 2017 Best Style Fan Award winner, however, he has influenced industries beyond the league, igniting fashion discussions and inspiring fans to wear any outfit with confidence.
The Oklahoma City Thunder point guard completed his stand-out 2017 season by breaking the NBA’s single-season triple-double record, previously held by Oscar Robertson with 41. Though this accomplishment helped solidify his MVP status, it also complements his style award.
First, Michael Jordan’s Jordan Brand supported their sponsored player by creating a pair of sneakers. The Air Jordan XXXI Why Not? PE, named after Westbrook’s Why Not? Foundation, features elements of the AJ III PE, a shoe first worn by Westbrook in 2013.
In addition to the Jordan Brand, however, Mountain Dew also sponsors Westbrook. The soft drink brand thought beyond shoes, partnering with designer Mark McNairy to customize an entire suit for the MVP. Because Mountain Dew does not own the right to use the NBA’s likeness in their projects, the design will focus completely on Westbrook and his contributions to the fashion conversation. The “Triple Double Breasted Suit” will be ready for Westbrook to wear later this year.
Focusing on the details of the design, one can identify obvious nods to Westbrook’s success.
- 42: The 42 on the jacket breast pocket signifies the player’s record-breaking number of triple-doubles.
- THEY: The crossed out “THEY” on the back of the collar derives from the slogan of Westbrook’s latest Mountain Dew campaign, “Don’t do they, do you.”
- :01: On the inside breast pocket, one second on the clock is a testament to Westbrook’s clutch plays at the end of games.
The camouflage print is a choice of Mountain Dew and McNairy’s, though the green color is an obvious connection to Mountain Dew’s branding. The company will also release cans commemorating Westbrook’s MVP accomplishment, though they will only be available in Oklahoma City.
