Companies understand the wide-ranging popularity of athletes and have used their persona to advance their products. This has resulted in some memorable commercials over the years. Currently, you can find the biggest names in sports all over your TV, making appearances in commercials for products ranging from banking companies to sugary snacks. Take a look at which athletes have been flooding your screen with their cameos.
Russell Westbrook – Jordan
The NBA league MVP, and Jordan Brand athlete, starred in one of the best commercials shortly before the 2016-2017 season began where he was found dancing to Lil Uzi Vert’s “Do What I Want.” The song was a perfect selection for Westbrook, who next to his fashion style is known for his “Why Not” mantra and dancing as a pre-game ritual.
LeBron James – Intel
This Intel commercial uses LeBron to push a metaphor of using outdated equipment. In the commercial, LeBron is sporting a retro uniform look, with short shorts and knee high socks. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he starts to dribble up the court, only to watch the ball deflate right before his eyes. It looks like the Golden State Warriors and outdated equipment are the only things that can stop the three-time NBA champion.
The backstory behind this commercial easily makes it the most hilarious. During the 2015-2016 NBA season, then-rookie Los Angeles Laker D’Angelo Russell was ridiculed for broadcasting via Snapchat that teammate Nick Young was cheating on his then-fiancée Iggy Azalea. In this Foot Locker commercial, Philadelphia 76ers rookie Ben Simmons is asking Russell, Towns, and Booker for advice in regards to navigating through his first year in the league. While Towns and Booker give helpful recommendations, Russell asks for Simmons’s phone, which he flings out the window. Only time will tell if Russell, who was recently traded to the Brooklyn Nets, has learned his lesson.
James Harden – Trolli
James Harden often showcases an even-keeled demeanor on the basketball court. But in this Trolli commercial for Sour Brite Crawlers, something finally gets into Harden’s mental. Harden’s head opens up revealing a smaller Harden head, continuing into a rising cascade. At one point, he even shoots laser beams from his eyes and his head opens up to reveal a pile of the Sour Brite Crawlers. While very random and awkward, this commercial seems fitting for a product that is likely targeting a younger demographic.
Two of the biggest stars in their respective sports team up for this Chase banking commercial. Curry is led into a green room where he runs into Williams, with a ping-pong table located in the room. Curry grabs a paddle and asks Williams if she plays tennis, to which she gives him a perplexed look. The two then engage in a friendly game of table tennis which quickly becomes heated, with both of them breaking props in the room. Good thing Curry and Williams have the Chase banking app so they can provide reimbursement for the damages.
