The Dame 4 BAPE Collection is the love child of adidas, Japanese streetwear brand A Bathing Ape (BAPE), and Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard. The goal was to reimagine contemporary basketball footwear by infusing it with high-end streetwear aesthetics. Mix in a touch of Damian’s admiration of BAPE’s signature design and you have a dope shoe on the market.
“I love the fact that as soon as people see it, they’re going to recognize what the collab is,” Lillard told ESPN. “I’ve always been a huge fan of Bape, going back to when I was in high school and Lil Wayne was rocking Bape heavy.”
During his 2015 Adidas Asia Tour, he visited the BAPE’s Tokyo Flagship which set the idea of collaborating in motion.
“I became even more inspired by the brand when I visited BAPE’s store in Japan,” said Lillard. “From that point, I knew I wanted the first major collaboration for my signature line to be with BAPE.”
Since brands usually start creating new designs about two years in advance, Lillard didn’t partner up until he already released his fourth shoe. However, this will be BAPE’s first time on an NBA court. In fact, Lillard plans on debuting the Bape Dame 4 during All-Star weekend.
It’s uncertain which version of the limited edition kicks he’ll be sporting as they come in red, green, and black. Still, interested sneakerheads can expect to see the brand’s trademark camo pattern and influences from BAPE’s iconic Shark hoodies. The shoe’s midsole showcases the coveted shark tooth design with one shark eye on each toe. The lettering “WGM” standing for World Gone mad is printed on the collar. It nods at the World War II initial inspiration of the hoodie.
A limited amount of all three editions will be available at Adidas 747 Warehouse in Los Angeles for $150. The ultimate two-day event in basketball culture will begin on Friday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m.
